Message from President John Petersen

The University of Tennessee is a research extensive institution and, as such, encompasses graduate, professional and undergraduate education on multiple campuses; research through our highly qualified faculty, and through partnerships including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and service to all Tennesseans through our Institute for Public Service and our statewide Institute of Agriculture. Yet teaching and learning are at the very heart of everything we do at the University of Tennessee. Our faculty share their knowledge with students, and the learning that takes place shapes the future of our graduates – and hence our state, the nation and the world.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success works with faculty and student leaders on all our campuses to safeguard and enhance that learning. He or she guides campuses in development of new academic programs to ensure we constantly strive to provide a superior educational product. He or she advises the campuses in development of their enrollment management plans to assure the various units practice strategic growth that will result in the continued recruitment, enrollment and retention of the most highly qualified students. He or she also works with state agencies, public K-12 education, and citizens to seek affordable, innovative means to increase the number of college graduates in Tennessee.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success is a vital member of the UT System leadership and reports directly to the President. This leader works collaboratively with other system officers, campus chancellors, provosts, and student affairs officers in development of academic and student affairs policy, from admissions requirements, to campus safety plans, to tenure and promotion, to accreditation. He or she is an ambassador of the University in the community, throughout the state, and nationally through service on boards and in associations.
I am committed to selecting a capable, highly qualified and visionary leader to join our executive team as UT Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success.
